Surrounded by miles of wilderness, The Balsams is a mountain hideaway that welcomes families, honeymoon couples and those who love golf, skiing, fishing or the outdoors.
One of only three remaining of the grand hotels that once stood in every scenic spot in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, The Balsams succeeds as a haven of luxury, a family resort and a center for outdoor activities – all at once. Located about an hour north of NH’s White Mountains, the resort is at the top of Dixville Notch, between the towns of Colebrook and Errol, about a three-hour drive from the state capital of Concord. It’s a long way from the population centers, but whether guests come for the luxury, the sports or the family activities, once they arrive, there’s no need to leave until checkout. Everything is on the property. Luxurious and Family-FriendlyThe luxury factor is clear from its spacious lobby and gracious staff, but evident also in the table d’hote dining room menu and in the spa, where massage therapists know exactly how to coax the kinks out of muscles after a day’s skiing or hiking. Families feel right at home in the large connecting rooms with plenty of closets. Children are welcome in the main dining room at any time (not true at many resort hotels), and a full daily program of activities is available for them at Camp Wind Whistle, the cost of which is included in the room rate. Or they can join parents canoeing on Lake Gloriette, fishing or just hanging out at one of the state’s most scenic swimming pools. The spa even has special massages and facials for children. Sports for All TastesSet as it is in the midst of wildlands, outdoor sports are a natural at The Balsams. Canoes wait at the shore of Lake Gloriette, just below the hotel, and kayaks are at another pond on the property. The use of either is included, as are the mountain bikes. Guided bike tours take place each day. Also at the lake is fishing equipment, and lessons are available. The golf course has such outstanding views that it’s hard to concentrate on the game, and in the winter, the resort has its own full-service downhill ski area. There is also a cross-country center, with skis and snowshoes. Children are not the only guests who are offered a full program of activities. In addition to all the outdoor sports, visiting craftsmen often give lessons, chefs present cooking demonstrations and the library and game room are always open. For many guests, the place to be is in a big rocker on the wrap-around porch, with a book in their lap in case they tire of the mountain scenery.
